Reiki – Therapeutic Touch For Energy, Peace And HealingAngelique Laaks
Whether you’re an ardent supporter of traditional “Western” medicine, a passionate follower of “alternative” therapies, or somewhere in between, there’s no denying that energy nourishes and maintains us. This energy comes from the food we eat, and also, if you’re a believer in natural healing, from the universe around us. This universal energy is the key component of Reiki, a Japanese healing art now widely practiced in many countries around the world.
Reiki is not an “out there” type of practice, nor is it tied into any religious faith or belief. It even has the support of the scientific community, as research using quantum physics is starting to suggest that in the near future, we may actually be able to scientifically measure the energy emitted from the practitioner’s hands.
Reiki is an ancient, hands-on healing system founded by Dr Mikao Usui at the beginning of the 20th Century in Japan. Reiki literally means “universal life force energy.” The word “Rei” translates as “universal,” while “Ki” is the Japanese word for “energy,” referring to the life force that flows through all living things. “Ki” might also be referred to as “Chi” by the Chinese, “Prana” by Hindus and “Light” by Christians.
Reiki practitioners believe energy stagnates in our bodies at points where we have either a physical injury or emotional pain. Over time, these energy blockages can make us sick, and the best way to clear them is by improving the flow of energy through the healing power of Reiki. Once energy is flowing freely again, it creates balance and harmony, making us feel relaxed. Pain and other symptoms of illness are also reduced.
What Can I Expect At A Reiki Treatment?
Reiki is a completely safe, comfortable, non-invasive treatment that anyone can enjoy – including children and pregnant women. It is often used as a complementary supplement to more conventional treatments, helping to provide emotional support during injury and illness recovery.
During your treatment, you remain fully clothed and either lie on a couch or treatment table or sit in a comfortable chair. Your Reiki practitioner then places their hands either gently on, or just above, your body, in a pre-determined sequence of positions, spending several minutes holding each position. There is no massage or manipulation, and the treatment is over both the front and back of your body. Sometimes treatment may focus longer on a specific area if required.
It’s important to remember that even the most skilled practitioners are not trained diagnosticians, and will not diagnose any condition or predict specific outcomes from your Reiki session. Reiki is also not a direct treatment for any particular illness.
During your session, which usually lasts for about 40 minutes, you will likely feel a peaceful sense of deep relaxation. Some people only have this type of emotional response, while others feel more physical sensations, such as tingling or heat. Many people feel so relaxed they actually fall asleep, while others find the treatment energising. But there is no wrong or right way to experience your Reiki treatment.
The Benefits Of Reiki
There are so many benefits of this relaxing and soothing treatment, but some of the most common ones include:
When we feel overwhelmed, isolated or disconnected from our lives, Reiki can bring great emotional comfort and peace, as well as a powerful sense of being able to better cope with the challenges we’re currently facing. Many people dealing with a terminal illness or the loss of a loved one find the treatment helps them feel more accepting and positive.
Because Reiki creates a feeling of deep relaxation, it’s a great way to help release stress and tension from your body. It provides valuable time where you don’t have to “do” anything, you can just “be.” It offers a space where you can be more present in your body, listen to it, and make wise decisions about your well-being going forward. Many people feel clearer and lighter after treatment.
Immune Support and Detox
Reiki helps your body get rid of toxins and supports your immune system. We live so much of our lives in a state of stress we forget how to return to a balanced equilibrium. Reiki helps us remember how to shift from the stress-induced “fight or flight” mode to a more self-healing “rest and digest” state of being. Good rest and digestion are both vital to maintaining vitality and overall health. The more often you can find balance, the more you can enjoy an active and productive life without being stressed, fatigued or burnt out.
Energy Within is an alternative medicine natural health clinic offering a comprehensive approach to affordable healthcare. We practice the “Usui Method” of Reiki, which is the system originally taught by Dr Usui. Its use of symbols and sacred words during attunements strengthens the connection between the individual and the “Universal Life Force Energy.” Contact us today to chat with one of our qualified therapists or to book your Reiki appointment.
